When you invite friends over, what is the one thing that you look forward to? The one thing that I look forward to…is sitting down chatting and catching up on where we last left off. I just finished up holding a bow shooting practice day @ my house….and well….keep reading to see how it went!
Karissa is a very good friend from high school. She is smart. She is beautiful. She loves the outdoors and probably the most important…she knows who the best team in the country is…the Iowa State Cyclones! I decided to call her up on Sunday and ask her if she wanted to come over and practice shooting bows and eat dinner. “Yeah,” Karissa said. “Be here by 6:00pm,” I told Karissa.
I had a few short hours before Karissa would be arriving to decide on what we were going to have for dinner. It was a beautiful day out that I decided we would grill cheeseburgers, cut up some fruit, chips & dip, pasta salad and what for dessert?!?!? I finally decided on our turtle brownies. As the turtle brownies were baking in the oven, I needed to get clean dishes put away, laundry folded, emails answered, etc. While scrambling around the house, I thought a little bit about how our conversation might go when Karissa arrived. Reminisicng about school, church and life.
As soon as I heard the doorbell (our dog Gibbon…as he barks every time someone walks up to the door), I knew Karissa was here and was jumping for joy! We hadn’t talked in awhile and was ready to catch up while having fun in the outdoors!
We sat down on the sofa and started having a conversation about life and outdoors. We smiled, we laughed, we joked…..we just enjoyed each others company. After catching up, we decided that we would head outside to see how our bows would treat us. Just like baking takes patients…so does hunting….
Hunting whether with a bow or gun isn’t something that you can just go out, buy your weapon and then go out that same day and expect to kill something on your first shot. It takes practice and patience. One of the things that we have learned while practicing is that when you practice with each other..you get to coach, help and celebrate together. Who doesn’t want that?!?!
One of my favorite parts of today was sitting up in the deer standing and seeing Karissa nail the deer. Her shot was perfect! I think we both about fell out of the stand because we were so excited and happy. These happy times also came with some challenging times when we were trying to find arrows in the tall weeds…trying to look out for the all so ugly poison ivy.
Hunting and baking to me go hand in hand. It’s something that I have to practice every day. Some days we can nail that recipe that we have been practicing for weeks and other days…we have to go back to the drawing board because the flavor isn’t how our taste buds want it. The moment that you quit practicing is the moment you can’t improve. I would probably forget how to use a mixer, turn on an oven, etc. LOL…that’s hard for me to imagine…but oh so true! The same goes for hunting….. The moment that we stop practicing, we aren’t going to be able to pull as much weight back….won’t be as comfortable with our bow..the distance that we are comfortable with shooting might become less.
Was there something in life that you really enjoyed doing, but maybe put on the back burner because of children, getting married, jobs, etc.??? What if you went home today and picked that hobby back up…would it be a little rusty or would you pick it up like it was just yesterday?!?! I challenge you to find time in your daily life, for whatever that “hobby” is. Don’t be afraid that it might not be perfect…because it’s not going to be perfect. Don’t worry about perfection…worry about not doing something that you love. I can’t imagine not using and practicing my bow. I can’t imagine not sitting up in the deer stand when hunting season rolls around. I can’t imagine not being out in mother nature and enjoying all that it has to offer. I can’t imagine doing it alone and that’s why I have hunting friends that come over on days like today to share our enjoyment of the same hobby together while filling our bellies with delicious food!
After putting our bows and targets away…we headed inside to get some dinner. The coals on the grill were started and ready for the meat. The pasta salad was made and on the counter, the fruit was on the counter, the baked beans were cooked, the chips and dip were out, the brownies were on the kitchen table….everything was ready but the meat. While waiting for the meat to cook on the grill, we talked about cowboy church, school…we are 26 years old and still sit around and talk about school. Some laugh, but I think it’s kind of cool. It must have been good or why would we sit back and reminse about it?!?!
After eating dinner, I served up brownies and ice cream. “I was thinking how good these brownies sounded when we were practicing,” Karissa said. We enjoyed each others company as we savored our dessert, giggling about life. As we have grown older over the years..it’s hard to imagine just 9 years ago we were both entering our senior year of high school. We were having the time of our lives, living the life of a teenager….no mortgage to pay for…no car payment…no taxes…… Now 9 years later we have a mortgage, car payment, taxes and stresses in life. Don’t ever let those stresses of life, get in the way of spending time with those that you care about…..life is really short and we don’t want to miss these moments.
